Rarely updated, rarely disappointing

The original Mushi Kingu

I’m a dork or whatever, but right now the 2 movies in theatres that I want to see the most are both only in Japan, and are both Kamen Rider movies. Let me show you how sweet both of these movies look. Pretty much this entire post is just an excuse to put cool pictures on the Blog. I’m not using nearly enough of my bandwidth or storage space on this webserver (just renewed for another year tonight), so what the heck.

First up is 「仮面ライダー響鬼と七人の戦鬼」, which translated to Kamen Rider Hibiki and the 7 War Demons. The title itself makes it awesome. So Hibiki, this year’s Rider show, is about demon “Riders” who fight monsters using sonic attacks. These sonic attacks are played using gimmicky instrument weapons, like taiko drumsticks, trumpets, and electric guitars. The movie takes place in Feudal Japan, because they fought a lot back then, and you can bring in a bunch of sweet fight scenes. Demons? Fighting in Feudal Japan? Unrealistic, you say? Yeah, and Tom Cruise really was the LAST samurai. I’ll bet he didn’t have an axe that turned into an electric guitar that he wailed on and made giant crab monsters explode. Nope, but Hibiki will have that. 音撃斬!雷電激震!

Oh and here’s the trailer(Windows Media), in case you’re bored and want to check it out. Oh but you have to sit through the trailer for the new Magiranger (this year’s Japanese Power Ranger show) trailer also.

OK now on to the other one. So yeah, every year in Japan, they make a new Kamen Rider (Masked Rider) TV series. Hibiki, for example, started last spring, and will probably end this coming January or so. Then the week right after, they’ll start a new one. Well way back in the 1970’s, they started the whole genre with a show just called Kamen Rider (Masked Rider). It’s about a guy who is turned into a cyborg super-soldier by a super mega evil crime organization named Shocker. He keeps his mind, becomes a good guy, and fights Shocker. Simple but sweet. This is what he looked like. Check out the hair:

And now, after America’s (OK Japan also) been just remaking stuff for movies for the past five or ten years because no one in Hollywood or anywhere has any creativity left, Japan has decided to remake their country’s iconic superhero (he really is, maybe in a tie with Ultraman) into a feature length film. The new movie, called easily enough, Kamen Rider the First, re-tells the original story and also the original story of the second Rider, named Kamen Rider No. 2. The movie looks pretty sweet also, or else I wouldn’t be sitting here at 2AM writing a long blog entry about it.

And here’s the trailer! (RealMedia format)

Oh, and yes, you heard me right, the evil organization in the original Kamen Rider and the new The First movie is called Shocker. This was way before those jokes started up when we were in middle school. But either way, I’m going to go ahead and put this up. Karen will love it, I’m sure.

Oops!
That’s all for now. My blog posts are probably going to start having more things like this. Not really updating anyone on anything, not really trying to make a point, not even (gasp) complaining about something. Pretty much I just want to link to cool stuff.

Tried Wasabi Ginger ice cream today at Cold Stone. It’s as bad as it sounds.

Here is the last post of what may very well be my last summer vacation (from school at least), ever. At the very least, it’s the last post of summer vacation 2005. It’s about 3:30AM, and I have a meeting at 10. Yeah, a meeting before classes even start. Yay. Anywho, I feel like this is the first time (maybe in my life) that I haven’t prepared for a new semester of classes. When you’re in elementary school, you have all your school supplies and crap packed in your bookbag, ready to go. Then you end up doing pretty much the same thing in middle school, although by then you also have a folder with papers and stuff. Then in high school, you don’t care quite as much but there’s always the binder of papers, and you care about who you’re going to see and talk to at school. College starts, and you have to actually get your books on your own, make it to class (after finding the building) and all that jazz. Usually, I’m pretty prepared, have books, etc by the start of classes. Well, this year, for some reason or another, I’ve done pretty much NOTHING. I haven’t gone to the bookstore to buy any books, I haven’t dug my bookbag from my room, I haven’t emptied out the papers in my binder from last spring, haven’t put pens or pencils in my bag. Heck, the most I’ve done was print out a syllabi and some Powerpoint slides from OnCourse about an hour ago.

There was no reason for that entire first paragraph, just pointing out that I don’t care about classes right now. Maybe it’s not that, just that I don’t care about preparing anymore. Textbook-wise, I’m going to wait until tomorrow night or Tuesday night to decide 1) if I really even need to buy the books, 2) if I should get them here in town or online. I’ve never actually bought textbooks online, but checking out Half.com the other day, it looks like I can get a lot of those big textbooks for much cheaper than the used ones at TIS or the IU Bookstore. Only problem with buying them online is that I think they’re cheaper versions (called “International”), and also it would probably take over a week to get delivered. Not like I ever really read my textbooks anyway.

In other blog news (nothing of importance), I’ve been watching this Japanese drama show lately (thanks to BitTorrent, of course), called Densha Otoko (電車男). It’s pretty sweet, although definitely pretty cheesy at times. It started broadcasting in July while I was there, but I never really have time to watch shows regularly in Japan. Plus this way I can download a bunch and watch them in a row. This show is an interesting story in itself. Apparently, a year or two ago on this huge Japanese BBS called 2ch, there were posts from a huge dork that saved a girl on a train, and the two ended up falling in love and getting together or somat. The “actual” posts from the BBS, which documented this story of them meeting and getting together, posted by the guy himself, was printed into a book, which became a best-seller in Japan. Now there is this TV show, a movie, comics, etc based on this story. Some people say this is all fake, and some that it really is a true story. Whatever, it doesn’t matter, it’s a cool show. Also, Misaki Ito plays the chick, and she is like the hottest girl I have ever seen. So that’s one of the Japanese shows I’ve been watching lately. And since I haven’t posted any pictures in my blog in a while, here is some stuff from Densha Otoko:

And to wrap up this post and this summer vacation up, I leave you with an image of the funniest sight all week: Nick Roberts showing up in my apartment when everyone is over, wearing a huge leather coat with a fur collar and cuffs. Nick truly is a man of style (what kind, I do not know). Laugh, and enjoy the fall everyone. I’m going to bed. Back to being a hard working student!

Freshmen all over the damn place

Wednesday was the “official” opening of the dorms here at IU, meaning one thing and one thing only: freshmen coming to campus by the masses. I went to IUSTV on Wednesday afternoon and every parking space on campus must have been taken up. It was nuts. And starting then (probably until next week), there are multiple groups of new kids walking all over the place. In the daytimes, you see them at the dorms, moving their junk in by the cartload, with their parents minivans blocking not only the circle driveways, but every road even remotely close to a dorm or campus apartments. Then you have these kids and their parents walking around in 3-person cells trying to figure out where everything is. Where is the library, where is the cafeteria, where is the phone booth, all kinds of stupid stuff like that. Then, anytime after 6PM when you drive through campus (or anywhere surrounding the area) you see the kiddies separated from their parents, now walking in packs. I drove down 3rd Street last night around 11:30 and saw at least 6 or 7 groups of freshmen walking towards Kirkwood. Seriously, it was like there is some kind of big magnet drawing the Freshmen to something on the west side of town. Look, kids. You can’t get into bars if you’re not 21. You don’t know where anything is. We know that you’re new. Stop crowding up the roads when I need to park to get to IUSTV. Yarg.

On less of a rant, I’ve realized after seeing the new kids walk around (and of course I laugh an evil laugh when I see people lost or wandering), how far and awesome I have become in the past few years. True, I was a freshman at one point. Now I’m a senior; from one end of the spectrum to the other, I am pretty much at the “King Level” of being on campus. Senior year is going to be mega sweet, just like senior year in high school was the best time ever there. I’m the boss of IUSTV now. They’re making me a new studio and office in Read that will be done in about a month. I’m going to have a pretty easy class load, meaning I get to do fun stuff at IUSTV. I know Bloomington and IU like the back of my hand. It is here for my convenience. Outside of that, I have about one year (a little less) to figure out what I’m going to do in May/June/July when I am done with school, have two degrees, and am going to need to find a way to support myself. Yes, fans, it’s time for Anthony Leong to start looking for a job. That’s going to be a lot of fun. And no, I don’t know if I’m going to work in TV or whatnot, and no, I don’t know if I’m going to work in America or in Japan. Honestly, there are so many things that I would like to do, as long as I find a decent job that remotely interests me and pays decent money, I don’t care where or what I am doing.

There really wasn’t much point to this post either, except to tell how bad parking is on campus, and also to say that I am awesome and senior year is going to be great. Also, if you have any leads or connections to help me land a sweet job, let me know!
